Bargain Hunters Lift Stocks

Bank stocks rose Tuesday as investors picked up bargains from Monday's selloff.

The KBW Bank Index rose 2.19% after falling 4.5% the day before.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. was up 2.4%; Bank of America Corp., 2.1%; Wells Fargo & Co., 0.2%; PNC Financial Services Group Inc., 1%; U.S. Bancorp, 0.5%, and Citigroup Inc., 14 cents a share, to $4.14.

Among the regional banking companies, SunTrust Banks Inc. rose 1.9%; Capital One Financial Corp., 3.5%; BB&T Corp., 4.2%; Regions Financial Corp., 3.6%; Fifth Third Bancorp, 4.4%; KeyCorp, 3%, and Zions Bancorp., 2.7%.

The broader markets also rose Tuesday after widespread declines on Monday. The Dow Jones industrial average added 0.9%, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index, 1.01%.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that construction of single-family homes rose for a fifth straight month.
