Capital Briefs: Hearing Set on GAO Study of ATM Charges

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Alfonse M. D'Amato will hold a hearing Wednesday at 10 a.m. to unveil the General Accounting Office's much-anticipated study on ATM surcharges.

Witnesses for the hearing had not been set as of Monday.

Sen. D'Amato has promised to introduce legislation outlawing surcharges, which he said "exploit" consumers.

In December, Sen. D'Amato asked the GAO to determine the number of financial institutions that surcharge, the average fee, and the impact of surcharges on consumer use.
