Capital Briefs: Texas Runoffs Oust 1 on Banking Panel, Keep 1

House Banking Committee member Steve Stockman lost his runoff election Tuesday to Nick Lampson, a former county tax assessor. Mr. Lampson captured 53% of the vote.

Another Texan on the banking panel, Democrat Ken Bentsen, retained his seat in a runoff with businesswoman Dolly Madison McKenna. Rep. Bentsen got 57% of the vote.

Mr. Stockman, first elected in 1994, was widely considered one of the most vulnerable of the House Republican freshmen. Opponents had accused him of having ties to militia groups.

The runoffs were two of three held Tuesday in Texas. The contests were necessary because no candidate won a majority in the November general election.

A banking committee spokesman said Republican leaders would select a replacement for Rep. Stockman. A spot on the committee has been reserved for Rep. Bentsen.
