Capital One Financial Corp. reported its second straight quarterly profit.
The $169.4 billion-asset McLean, Va., company earned $375.6 million in the fourth quarter, compared to $393.5 million in the third quarter and a $1.4 billion loss a year earlier. For 2009, Capital One earned $319.9 million, compared to a loss of $78.7 million in 2008.
The provision for loan losses fell 28.1% from the third quarter and 59.8% from a year earlier, to $843.7 million.
The Cleveland-based bank is projecting steady growth in net interest income even as credit losses remain manageable. But Chairman and CEO Chris Gorman also said that he thinks a recession is likely.
The first-quarter increase involved commercial real estate loans, including some problematic multifamily loans and an office credit, but none of the criticized loans were to consumers, officials at the Dallas company say. Further CRE deterioration is anticipated.
