Union Bank of California is conducting a food coupon pilot at automated teller machines in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
Until April 3, ATM users get, in addition to their transaction receipt, a coupon redeemable for a free sandwich at Subway.
The coupons are available at any Union Bank ATM displaying the Subway chain's familiar yellow and brown sticker. The coupons are the first of several planned "client rewards" available at 83 ATMs in the two counties.
The bank's preliminary research shows that customers tend to use ATMs more often if they can save money on purchases.
