CFPB Medical Debt Hearing Set

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will hold a field hearing on medical debt collections at noon, EST on Dec. 11 in Oklahoma City.

More information about what will be discussed is expected later but the hearing will feature remarks from CFPB Director Richard Cordray along with testimony from industry representatives, consumer groups and members of the public.

Registration is required to attend and the hearing is open to anyone. It will be aired live on the CFPB’s blog.

The CFPB has not included the regulation of medical debt in much of its work so far and there are still some questions about whether medical debt falls within the bureau’s scope under the Dodd-Frank Act.

The CFPB recently extended the time period for collection "pre-rule" activities to April 2015.
