Because of an editing error, a July 21 article, "Maine Thrift Is State's First to Sell SBLI" (page 9), understated the number of branches Bangor Savings Bank is acquiring from Fleet Financial Group. The correct figure is 28, about one-third of those Fleet had owned in Maine.

In the same issue a page 10 table, "Top 50 Banking Companies in Discretionary Trust Assets," understated those of Fleet Financial Group. The yearend total shown excluded assets managed by Columbia Management Co. of Portland, Ore., which Fleet bought Dec. 8, and by Fleet Investment Advisors Inc. With those assets included, Fleet's yearend total was $76.9 billion-12th largest among U.S. banking companies.

Also, because of a data input error, too large a figure was shown for Wachovia Corp. in the column headed "All fiduciary trust assets." The correct figure is $130.7 billion.
