WASHINGTON — After leaving Washington at the end of July, Elizabeth Warren started August as the object of "Doonesbury" cartoonist Garry Trudeau's affections.
Fans of "Doonesbury" will be familiar with Joanie Caucus, a retired Washington lawyer with a twenty-something son named Jeff.
In the most recent series of strips, Joanie tells her son that she is considering coming out of retirement to work on a political campaign. "The only problem is that the woman I want to work for hasn't decided yet whether she'll run," Joanie says, in a reference to Warren's potential U.S. Senate candidacy in Massachusetts.
Joanie then admiringly describes Warren's work in establishing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Warren left the CFPB at the end of July after being passed over for the director's job.
"You'd like her," Joanie tells Jeff. "She's direct, smart, approachable…"
"Wow. Is she hot?" Jeff responds.
"For 62? You bet," Joanie says.
In the past, Trudeau has made campaign contributions to Democratic candidates such as Barack Obama, John Kerry, Howard Dean and Al Franken. So if Warren does run for the Senate, she knows who to dial for dollars.
