ETF Assets Rise 45%, Hit $1T

Global assets for exchange-traded funds hit the $1 trillion mark in 2009, a milestone long expected by industry insiders and a reflection of ETFs' rapid emergence as a competitor to the $7 trillion mutual fund industry.

ETF assets rose 45.2% worldwide, from $710.9 billion in 2008, according to BlackRock. At yearend there were 1,939 ETFs worldwide, with 3,775 listings from 109 providers on 40 exchanges.

In the United States the ETF industry grew 41.9%, with 28 providers offering 772 ETFs on two exchanges.
