FHA Says LPS Foreclosure Data in April was Not Accurate

The Federal Housing Administration says April foreclosure statistics from Lender Processing Services were inaccurate.

The housing agency and LPS both said Thursday they are working together to identify the data discrepancy.

In May, LPS released a report that showed FHA foreclosure starts had jumped 73% in April, to 63,129, from 36,311 in March.

Though LPS uses data supplied by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which oversees FHA, the agency said LPS reported a substantially higher number of monthly FHA foreclosure starts than FHA's data revealed.

FHA said in a statement that it remains confident in the accuracy of the data it reported in April," FHA said in a statement, but warned that "the very large increase reported by LPS for the month of April was not accurate."

Michelle Kersch, an LPS spokeswoman, admits there was an error.

"LPS has worked together with FHA and is adjusting its models based on those conversations," she said.
