Pyramis Global Advisors of Boston, Fidelity Investments' institutional investment management, has hired Kevin Uebelein as president and chief executive officer.

He succeeded Peter Smail, who announced his retired in January, but continued running the unit until Fidelity found a successor.
Mr. Uebelein had been chief investment officer for all of Newark, N.J.'s Prudential Financial Inc.'s international businesses for the past seven years.
Pyramis, also in Boston, announced the hiring Thursday. Pyramis had $164 billion of assets under management as of Dec. 31.
