Focus on Bankruptcy Reform President Bush on April 20 signed into law sweeping legislation to overhaul the bankruptcy code after almost a decade of debate. The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, which was nearly derailed several times because of heated debate or tangential political events, is supposed to steer more debtors into repayment plans and promises benefits for almost every sector of the financial services industry. Supporters said it was needed because many filers were abusing the system, but consumer advocates complained that lenders were trying to dodge responsibility for easy credit offers.
