Zurich Financial Services, the big Swiss insurance company, said Tuesday that it has named Gary Kaplan chief underwriting officer for its Zurich North America Commercial unit in Schaumburg, Ill., and head of its technical center.

Mr. Kaplan most recently was a senior vice president and program executive for underwriting-related initiatives in the strategic initiatives group at Zurich North America Commercial.
His time at Zurich also includes leading the underwriting of large-property business for the former diversified products business unit and a stint as a senior vice president and director of energy property. He joined the company in 1995.
