In Brief: Hewlett-Packard Security Offering

PALO ALTO, Calif. -Responding to California and Washington state laws designed to safeguard customer credit card numbers, the Verifone division of Hewlett-Packard Co. has launched software that prints only the last five numbers of customers' credit card accounts on receipts.

The payment processors First Data Corp. and Vital Processing Services have certified the software, called SoftPay 3.5, for merchant use. Further processor certifications are pending.

Verifone will introduce a version of the payment system software for Discover Financial Services Inc. of Riverwoods, Ill., within a few weeks.

To allow merchants to handle chargeback requests, SoftPay 3.5 lets merchants print reports with full account numbers while blocking them from merchant and customer receipts.
