In Brief: OCC Warns of Scam Circulating in Faxes

WASHINGTON — The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is warning bankers and consumers that letters and faxes encouraging recipients to send the agency money to release large sums in foreign accounts are a scam.

One letter claims the OCC will release up to $10 million upon receipt of a $415,000 “international conversion distribution charge.” The agency, however, said it “does not have any involvement in the private transfer of funds, nationally or internationally, nor does it maintain any type of deposit account for or in the name of any individual.”
