He succeeded James H. Langmead, 54, who had been with the $2.4 billion-asset Olney, Md., company for 12 years, the last three as its CFO. Sandy Spring did not say why he left.

Mr. Mantua, 46, has been with Sandy Spring since 1999, most recently as the senior vice president in charge of asset and liability management and financial planning. He has also been named the chief investment officer. In that role, he succeeded Lawrence T. Lewis, 55, who retired Monday.

The unexpected executive changes came just two weeks after Sandy Spring announced it would post lower-than-expected earnings for this year because of a weak net interest margin in the third quarter.
