In Brief: Swiss Re Sees Pinch for Primary Life Firms

Primary life insurers may face a pricing and capacity crunch this year as they seek reinsurance in a market controlled by fewer players, according to Swiss Reinsurance Co.'s Conning Research and Consulting Inc.

Consolidation among life reinsurers over the past few years has limited the number of suppliers and contributed to capital constraints, the Hartford, Conn., firm says in a new study, "Life Reinsurance: Capacity and Other Challenges."

At the same time, primary life insurer have become more dependent on reinsurers for growth, says the study, released Tuesday.

Swiss Re, of Zurich, also owns the Fox-Pitt, Kelton investment banking firm.
