The provider behind the popular Computrace LoJack for Laptops anti-theft service for both individual PC buyers and corporate IT administrators is adding new geolocation capabilities. The new GPS tracking service boasts the ability to track down laptops or other enabled portable device locations within a 33-feet perimeter.
Absolute Software has added GPS tracking to its mobile IT management suite. As part of pinpointing the devices, managers can also view location reports of their inventories using Google Maps, including for more benign uses such as software license tracking or detecting prohibited software installations. But catching thieves is where Absolute has built its name. Computrace has recovered 6,000 stolen laptops through its firmware-based IP-tracking subscription service that is installed at the factory by PC manufacturers. In July, Absolute boasted of having recovered three laptops stolen at U.S. airports, leading to the arrest of several crooked baggage handlers at JFK, Tampa and Phoenix.
Absolute also offers Computrace Mobile for smaller handheld devices which may contain sensitive corporate and customer data – all of which can be secured remotely (including deletion) after being reported missing.
