MasterCard Inc. has hired a Citigroup Inc. veteran, Carlos Menendez, as its group executive for global debit.

Menendez, who is to start in September, will be in charge of innovation and strategies for MasterCard's debit products worldwide, the Purchase, N.Y., card company said Monday. Menendez worked at Citi for 14 years, most recently as its chief operating officer for Western Europe.
"With extensive consumer banking experience spanning Europe, the Middle East and the Americas, Carlos will enhance our global perspective and lead MasterCard's future debit growth," Tim Murphy, MasterCard's chief product officer, said in a press release.
