MasterCard, Visa Add International Call Features

MasterCard International and Visa U.S.A. have expanded their calling card capabilities to include phone calls made to the United States from foreign countries.

About 200 banks issue combination credit cards and calling cards through the associations' MasterPhone and VisaPhone programs, linked to MCI Communications Corp.

Now those banks' cardholders can charge calls made from foreign 45 countries to the United States on an MCI line, said a spokeswoman for MCI. They had been restricted to domestic calls or international calls originating in the United States.

The calling card feature was picked up by many issuers last year after American Telephone and Telegraph Co. launched its Universal card, which combines an AT&T calling card with a Visa or MasterCard.
