Mr. Mathas, 40, is currently the president and chief operating officer at New York Life, where has worked since 1995.
He will succeed Sy Sternberg, who will retire from his post as the company's chief executive officer on June 30 but will remain the nonexecutive chairman for an indefinite period,
New York Life announced Wednesday. Mr. Sternberg, 64, has been the chairman and CEO since 1997 and has worked for New York Life since 1989.
