Pennsylvania Files $2.1M Lien Against Collection Agency

Pennsylvania-based collection agency Commonwealth Financial Systems Inc. owes more than $2 million to the state's Department of Revenue.

The company, based in Dickson City, Pa., is supposed to pay state sales tax on its commissions from the debts it collects from consumers but this week the state filed a $2.1 million lien against the company's assets. The state is seeking $1.5 million in what it believes are unpaid sales taxes and another $600,000 in late fees and fines.

The Federal Trade Commission reports there are 40 complaints pending against Commonwealth Financial from U.S. consumers. Two lawsuits were filed in 2011 against the company claiming it failed to honor agreements, including one involving $13 million.

Commonwealth Financial officials were not immediately available for comment. The agency employs approximately 75 people.
