Forty-five percent of those surveyed said that they had become more knowledgeable about their investments since the financial crisis began roughly two years ago.

The survey of 602 mutual fund owners, which was conducted in April by Kelton Research, found that 31% of those questioned said they regularly speak with their broker or financial adviser but that 36% said they do not know which mutual funds they own.

Charles Schwab, a San Francisco brokerage house, issued the survey results Friday; it had $1.2 trillion of assets under management on June 30.
