Smart Bits: Microsoft Certifies Card Reader for PCs

Publicard Inc. said its Tritheim Technologies subsidiary has been certified by Microsoft Corp. for compliance with the PC/SC specification.

PC/SC defines how smart cards are read by personal computers. The certification applies to the SmartPort LT readers for PCMCIA computer- insert cards. Tritheim can now display the "Designed for Windows" logo indicating its passing of Microsoft laboratory testing.

"We always have embraced the need for standards and have pursued them proactively," said Marc Postlewaite, president and chief executive officer of Tritheim. "The SmartPort LT is the first milestone on our road to enhance all of our designs to support PC/SC."

SmartPort LT previously was certified to work with the Mondex and Visa Cash programs, and it meets the EMV-Eurocard-MasterCard-Visa-requirements for terminal interfaces.

"An important part of Publicard's strategy always has been to ensure that all of its products are compliant with any appropriate standard," said Richard Phillimore, executive vice president for smart card businesses. "As we have passed the Microsoft test, we can assure all of our current and potential customers that our products will meet all of their needs."
