State Street Corp. promoted Jay Hooley to president and chief operating officer.
Mr. Hooley, 51, is a vice chairman and the head of State Street's global investment servicing, trading, and research businesses.
The president and chief operating officer positions have been vacant since 2004, when Ron Logue was promoted to chairman and chief executive officer.
With the promotion, announced Wednesday, Mr. Hooley will oversee the Boston company's global asset servicing activities, including investment servicing, investment research and trading, and securities finance.
Mr. Hooley has worked for State Street since 1986. After leading its fund sales organization, he joined its shareholder servicing joint venture with DST Systems Inc. of Kansas City, Mo.
From 1988 to 1990 he was the president and CEO of State Street's National Financial Data Services, and he went on to become the president and CEO of its Boston Financial Data Services.
In 2000 he was put in charge of State Street's global investment servicing business, and he became the head of global investing services in 2004.
Mr. Hooley, a member of State Street's operating group, was named vice chairman in 2006.
State Street had $15 trillion of assets under custody and $2 trillion of assets under management as of March 31.
