Sun Microsystems Inc. announced the completion of a six-month project to enable the electronic banking systems of FICS to run on the Sun Solaris operating system.
FICS, a multinational software company based in Belgium, has more than 600 financial industry clients including ABN Amro, Bank of America, Barclays Bank, Citibank, Deutsche Bank, and Sumitomo Bank.
FICS' Electronic Services Delivery, or ESD, server has been ported to Solaris, the companies said, and the compatibility extends to the FICS Corporate Banking for Windows, Corporate Internet Banking, and Retail Internet Banking systems.
The ESD Server is also JavaStation-ready, meaning a bank can easily adapt to a "thin client" operating mode.
Herve Couturier, FICS head of marketing and business development, said the collaboration opens up "a large and promising market" via Sun's Unix and Java platforms and "its 60% share of the market for Internet-based servers."
