Umpqua Hires Wamu Veteran

Umpqua Holding Corp. said Monday that it has hired Colin Eccles, a former Washington Mutual Inc. technology executive, as its chief information officer.

The Portland, Ore., banking company said Mr. Eccles will oversee technology use in Umpqua's retail channels and back-end processing systems, including network operations, item processing, online banking, and automated teller machines.

Mr. Eccles, who has 28 years of experience in banking technology, had been the chief information officer of Washington Mutual's retail banking unit, where he oversaw transaction processing, technical operations, and the technology used to support the Seattle thrift company's retail delivery channels.

Ray Davis, Umpqua's president and chief executive, said in a press release that "technology and innovation are key components of our culture" and that he expects Mr. Eccles to "generate fresh ideas as we continuously improve our customers banking experiences."
