Among U.S. states, Alaska has the highest credit card debt, with a median of $3,384, according to a report from the Americans for Fairness in Lending. That is $1,200 higher than debt per borrower in any other state, the group says. New Hampshire ranks second with a median debt of $2,109, and Connecticut ranks third with $2,094 in median debt. The national nonprofit group developed the report to emphasize how widespread credit card debt has become. The organization based the data on year-end 2006 information from TransUnion, one of the three major credit bureaus. The group has launched an education and advocacy campaign called Common Credit Cards Tricks and Traps, which provides resources for consumers on abusive practices.
