Alliance Bank Issuing Malaysia’s First Telco-Branded Prepaid MasterCard

A collaboration involving Digi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd., Alliance Bank Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and MasterCard Worldwide has led to the launch of Malaysia’s first telco-branded prepaid card, the companies announced Aug. 16.

Called the Digi Simple MasterCard, the prepaid card enables the telco’s subscribers to make purchases and cash withdrawals wherever MasterCard or its Cirrus-branded ATM cards are accepted, a Digi Telecommunications spokesperson tells PaymentsSource.

The telco is marketing the card to customers who may not be eligible for a credit or debit card, the spokesperson says, noting the card is available to anyone older than 18 who has a valid ID and a mailing address.

Cardholders may reload their card accounts with up to 10,000 ringgits (US$3,357 and 2,330 euros) at cash-deposit machines or ATMs or through online funds transfers from Alliance bank accounts.

When reloading the card for certain amounts, users receive free corresponding talk-time on their mobile-phone subscriptions. For example, subscribers receive 20 minutes worth of talk time when reloading up to 50 ringgits into their prepaid card accounts.

Cardholders pay no monthly or joining fees, but they incur an 8 ringgit surcharge to top replenish value in their accounts at Alliance Bank ATMs. They also pay a 1 ringgit cash-withdrawal charge at Alliance ATMs and 8 ringgits at Cirrus machines operated by other ATM deployers.
