Beck Launches Taxi App to Compete with Uber in Toronto

Canada’s Beck Taxi has launched a new app that accepts PayPal and card payments and is designed to compete with Uber and Lyft in Canada’s largest city.

The app, available only in Toronto, will allow taxi customers to hail and pay for cabs on their phone, just like the much-hyped transportation apps. PayPal will support the payments system, which is built for Android, iOS, and Blackberry 10.

"This update offers customers the ability to pay in-app and view wait times, all while providing riders with a quieter trip by cutting down on some of the radio chatter, which we know Beck customers will appreciate," Beck Taxi operations manager Kristine Hubbard said in a release.

Uber recently partnered with point of sale technology provider TouchBistro to provide a free transportation service to restaurant consumers in Toronto.

"We believe that people will use their mobile phones to pay if there's a clear benefit,” said Alexander Peh, Head of Mobile and Market Development at PayPal Canada, in a release.
