Cardtek creates national mobile payment platform in UAE

International payments technology provider Cardtek has created the emPAY mobile wallet with partner Emcredit to develop a nationwide payment platform in the United Arab Emirates.

As part of Dubai's Smart Government Initiative, the Near Field Communication-based emPAY wallet will allow consumers to make in-store and remote payments, initiate money transfers, pay for government utilities, school fees and their phone bills, among other options.

Cardtek will provide the payment infrastructure for Emcredit, a unit of the Dubai Economic Department, and the services and support for payments through smartphones, wearables and other mobile devices.

"We have great confidence that this partnership will ease UAE's citizens' lives in terms of payments and bring new opportunities and benefits to the UAE's economic development," Cardtek CEO Ayse Nil Sarigollu said in an April 2 press release. "We have had resounding success in the international arena with numerous accomplishments with clients in four continents through proactively following the changes in fintech sector."

Among other developments, Cardtek has worked with Mastercard in the past to develop NFC payments and integrate Mastercard's digital enablement services for security. However, the announcement of emPAY did not mention any affiliation with specific card brands.
