Banco do Brasil, Brazil's largest bank based on assets and customers, will buy 5,400 ATMs and check dispensers from Diebold Inc., both companies announced Tuesday. The Banco do Brasil agreement is the second-largest contract United States-based Diebold has signed with a Brazilian bank in less than a year . In May, Diebold agreed to sell 9,600 full-function ATMs to Caixa Economica Federal, a government-owned bank based in Rio de Janeiro. Diebold called the contract the largest in the company's history and possibly the biggest in ATM-industry history. The manufacturer's agreement with Brasilia-based Banco do Brasil involves 3,500 model CD 4500 cash-dispenser ATMs and 1,900 terminals that print checks, Diebold says. It is common for ATMs in Brazil to print and dispense check books. Banco do Brasil has a network of 40,000 ATMs, and the Diebold deal is part of the bank's strategy to replace ATMs that are at least 10 years old. With 153,298 machines, Brazil has the largest installed base of ATMs of any South American or Latin American country, according to documents distributed by ATM maker NCR Corp. at the ninth annual ATM Industry Association Conference in February in New Orleans.
