The Riverwoods, Ill.-based card brand worked with PayPal Inc., the payments unit of eBay Inc., to develop the service, which enables Discover cardholders to send funds to other customers and noncustomers (see story).

The transactions appear as a purchase on the Discover cardholder’s account and enable the customer to earn cash-back rewards. Recipients must have a PayPal account to access the funds.

Discover first announced it was working with PayPal on the service in October. Money Messenger, which went live on April 11, is available online at Discover’s customer website and on Discover’s mobile applications for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry smartphones.

Visa Inc. and American Express Co. have also recently released P2P services that enable customers to send funds using their cards.
