Facebook To Enable Friends To Jointly Buy One Gift Card

Many users will be able to share funds to purchase one gift card for a friend on Facebook Inc.'s Web site under a new agreement between SocialWise Inc., an online-payments software company, and RockYou!, a company that creates applications for social-networking Web sites, the companies announced today. Starting next week, Facebook users may jointly purchase gift cards for friends from such companies as Amazon.com, Old Navy, Banana Republic, AMC Theatres and Travelocity.com. Based in Redwood City, Calif., RockYou! builds applications such as automatic birthday announcements for FaceBook, MySpace and other social-networking sites. "SocialWise will enable RockYou! to easily integrate gifting and monetization capabilities to our applications and services," Ro Choy, RockYou! vice president of business development, says in a press release. "Our goal is to open a new channel for prepaid gift cards," says Jim Collas, president and CEO of San Diego-based SocialWise Inc., which is a subsidiary of ideaEdge Inc.
