Fujistu Advanced Solutions Ltd. has introduced technology that enables Japanese retailers to offer gift cards from freestanding shelves and kiosks, according to a statement this week from InComm, the United States-based prepaid technology firm that is helping the effort. Prepaid cards in Japan typically carry preloaded value, making them usable by criminals who steal them, the statement says. Japan-based Fujistu's product, called Yagoyasan, enables retailers to activate the cards using point-of-sale terminals, a practice common in the U.S. InComm did not respond to a request for comment.
