Transaction processor First Data Corp. said Friday it signed a five-year processing deal with the card unit of Italy-based Unipol Banca, owned by Italian insurance firm Unipol Gruppo Finanziario S.p.A. The card unit, Unicard S.p.A., manages acquiring for Coop, an Italian supermarket chain that issues cobranded Visa and private-label credit cards, United States-based First Data says in a statement. Unicard also is working toward MasterCard certification. The insurance group wants to "consolidate [its] entire card business into Unicard," and First Data will help with that effort, the statement says. Neither First Data nor Unicard responded to requests for comment.
