Fidelity National Information Services Inc., or FIS, has approached United Kingdom-based vendor Misys PLC regarding a possible acquisition, FIS announced June 23.
The announcement does not constitute “a firm intention to make an offer” for Misys, but FIS said it had “received a preliminary approach” from an unnamed party that may or may not lead to an actual offer.
An FIS spokesperson could not immediately be reached.
FIS is one of the largest providers of processing, mobile and online banking, account management, and other software to the banking industry. Its last major acquisition was its nearly $3 billion purchase of rival vendor Metavante Technologies Inc., which was completed in October 2009 (
In December, FIS completed its $292 million acquisition of global technology consulting firm Capital Markets Co. NV., which it said would help it grow internationally.
An acquisition of Misys could help FIS further expand its international business, which has become a bigger focus as the most recent financial crisis halted investments by U.S. banks.
In the first quarter, FIS said its revenue grew 12% from a year earlier to $1.4 billion.
