United Kingdom-based HSBC Holdings PLC had deployed 108 ATMs by mid-August in Vietnam, up 315% from 26 ATMs at the end of 2007, a bank spokesperson tells CardLine Global. The bank says it is the first foreign bank to deploy at least 100 ATMs in the country, but CardLine Global could not confirm that claim independently. HSBC deployed its first ATM in Vietnam in 1995, the spokesperson says. Over the next three years, the bank plans to spend at least US$28 million (18.8 million euros) to expand its ATM and self-service banking offerings in Vietnam, the spokesperson says. In May, HSBC signed a deal with Vietnam-based Techcombank that links Techcombank's 260 ATMs with HSBC's network of cash machines (CardLine Global, 27 May).
