Residents of Hubli and Dharwad in the Indian state of West Bengal may use credit cards to pay their property taxes through an online tax-payment system set to launch in November.
“The service will be launched within two weeks,” says an official at the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corp. who requested anonymity. “A lack of manpower and process issues have hindered us from being able to recover property taxes efficiently. We hope the online system will help us overcome that.”
The Management of Information System unit of the corporation is developing the system, according to the official. When the free service launches, taxpayers may use MasterCard- or Visa-branded cards to pay their taxes online, he adds.
Since Indian law allows payment of only a few taxes by credit card, most multiple tax-payment sites do not offer the payment option. Also, Indian citizens tend to resist using credit cards to avoid debt.
Many online tax-payment sites do not give a credit card option for payment, while a few provide it along with other payment options such as debit cards.
To use the new service, taxpayers visiting the corporation's website click on the link for paying property taxes and register their names. They then enter their property-tax number, and the status of their tax bill displays on the screen, the official says.
“They can then make the payment by credit card, after which they will get an automatic mail confirming the online payment of property tax,” he says.
