Indian Issuers Charging For In-Person Card-Bill Payments

IMGCAP(1)]

More banks in India reportedly will charge customers who pay credit card bills at bank branches using cash. Such financial institutions as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Standard Chartered Bank reportedly have imposed such fees, though the banks did not immediately reply to CardLine Global calls to confirm the reports. ICICI reportedly charges 100 rupees (US$2 or 1.55 euros) for such payments, while HDFC charges 50 rupees. The charges provide further evidence that Indian banks want to move cardholders away from making card payments at teller counters, which can result in lines, and to making online and drop-box payments, Prathima Rajan, an India-based analyst for United States-based research firm Celent LLC, tells CardLine Global. "Banks … find cash payments at bank counters an expensive and time-consuming affair as opposed to customers using other channels," Rajan adds.
