The free service is available to all of the banks 11.5 million debit cardholders in the country who register, an HDFC customer service representative tells PaymentsSource. After registering, cardholders may access any of the bank’s approximately 6,000 ATMs to pay the income taxes, she says.

“For now, one cardholder would be able to pay the income tax on two [Permanent Account Numbers],” the representative says. “This would mean that a cardholder would be able to pay his own and the tax for a blood or marital relative as well.”

The Indian tax office uses Permanent Account Numbers to identify taxpayers in the country.

In April, Oriental Bank of Commerce Ltd. and Union Bank of India Ltd. began offering the service to their customers (see story).

In March, Axis Bank Ltd. similarly launched a tax-payment service tied to its ATMs (see story).

Corporation Bank Ltd. was the first bank to offer the tax-payment service in India in 2009 (see story).
