ING Bank, based in the Netherlands, has introduced a downloadable application for the Google G1 Smart Phone that enables phone users to find the location of the nearest ATMs inside buildings, an ING spokesperson tells ATM&Debit News, a CardLine Global sister publication. ING calls the application "wegwrjzer," and consumers can obtain it for free on Google Inc.'s Android Market, an online retailer, the spokesperson says. Wegwrjzer combines the Google Smart Phone's global-positioning technology, compass and camera. "Consumers point the phone's camera at the horizon, and wegwrjzer displays on the phone's screen the addresses of the nearest ATMs," the spokesperson says. ING and mobile-phone company T-Mobile collaborated in the development of wegwrjzer. ING rolled out wegwrjzer last weekend in the Netherlands, where ING owns 3,600 ATMs, the spokesperson says. Wegwrjzer also can find the locations of competitors' ATMs, the spokesperson adds. ING has no plan to introduce wegwrjzer in other countries. Wegwrjzer's rollout underscores the important role ING sees mobile phones playing in the future of mobile banking, the spokesperson says.
