The app update, which went live July 2, lets users initiate payments from Google's new line of smartwatches. It also sends consumers notifications when users are near LevelUp merchants that they frequent. Finally, the Android Wear update allows users to open the LevelUp app through a spoken command on the smartwatch.

Android Wear is the second smartwatch platform supported by LevelUp. A developer has used LevelUp's application programming interfaces to design an app for the Pebble smartwatch. LevelUp has also experimented with Google Glass.

The LevelUp app displays a QR code on a smartphone's screen to enable payments using a special scanner it provides to merchants. In its unveiling of Android Wear, Google demonstrated that its smartwatch platform could support QR codes for airline boarding passes and other uses.
