Independent sales organizations can avoid many compliance problems with Federal Trade Commission rules by providing clear disclosure of merchant-contract terms, according to Mary Dees Griffith, president and chief operating officer of Preferred Health Technology Inc. Dees Griffith delivered her comments last week at the Electronic Transactions Association's Strategic Leadership and Networking Forum in Chicago. ISOs need to provide "clear disclosure so the merchant doesn't need to try to understand what the sales agent doesn't say" about the contract's terms, said Dees Griffith. "Disclosure is a big issue." Training is important because some agents may not understand that a "minor change to an agreement after the client signs is not a minor change," she noted. Dallas-based Preferred Health Technology provides electronic-payment and transaction-processing services to the health care industry.
