Michigan Township Hires Agency To Collect Accident-Response Fees

Pittsfield Township in southeastern Michigan has hired a collection agency to pursue fees resulting from accident responses on local highways.

Fire Recovery USA will send fee notices and communicate directly with insurance companies. The agency will keep 20% of all recoveries.

The township began charging fees for accident calls on Interstate 94 and US-23 in 2011 and has assessed $34,961, but only collected just more than $8,000.

The time needed to write up invoices and communicate with insurance companies has been too much for the township's Public Safety Department staff to handle, according to township officials.

The department ultimately may expand the contract with Fire Recovery to include costs incurred from false alarms and building inspections.
