Members at BECU, formerly Boeing Employees Credit Union, and hundreds of credit unions had their cards rejected at Co-op Financial ATMs on Sept. 16 because of a disruption in the system at processor Fidelity National Information Systems.

Hundreds of its members were affected, BECU said. The network crash disrupted BECU members' transactions for a few hours, and Co-op is recovering and is processing transactions again it said.

Customers at hundreds of banks also were affected.

The glitch caused credit card and ATM transactions over the Co-op system to be denied starting around noon and until around 6:30 p.m., according to Caroline Lane, Co-op senior vice president of business development and marketing. “By 6:30, all transactions were back to normal,” she said. During the crash, consumers could not use their debit cards at ATMs or in stores.

The cause of the outage was still being investigated. But Fidelity National Information Systems notified Co-op and its other customers that the problems originated with its system.
