Central Bank of Nigeria is considering introducing biometric cards in the country to combat ATM fraud, bank Gov. Mallam Sanusi Lamido noted March 24 during the institution’s monetary policy committee meeting.
The bank’s operations department is conducting feasibility studies and plans to submit a report to the bank’s Committee of Governors. But it is too early to say when such an initiative might occur and what might be required, a spokesperson for the bank tells PaymentsSource.
Nigerian banks have refunded more than 2 billion Naira (US$12.8 million or 9.1 million euros) to cardholders affected by ATM fraud, he says.
