PNC App Adds Check Capture

PNC Financial Services Group Inc. has updated its Virtual Wallet application for the Apple inc. iPhone to include mobile check capture, the bank announced April 11.

The feature enables iPhone users to deposit checks by capturing their images with the phone’s camera. PNC is one of many banks to switch on this feature for mobile-banking users.

The bank initially designed its Virtual Wallet account to encourage paperless remote banking. For example, users of the original Virtual Wallet account would be assessed a 50-cent fee for each check after the first three written each month; as an alternative, PNC provides CashEdge Inc.’s Popmoney electronic payment service.

PNC offers Virtual Wallet as part of a group of three linked checking and savings accounts. In September, PNC plans to divide the features of Virtual Wallet’s checking account into two accounts called Spend and Performance Spend. Both account types are available and can be accessed through the same mobile app.
