Shell Links Discount Gas Card To Checking Accounts

First Data Corp. will support a closed-loop debit card for customers of Shell Oil Products US beginning in January, Elizabeth Hudson, a spokesperson for Shell U.S. Consumer Cards, tells ATM&Debit News, a CardLine sister publication. When customers pay with the Shell $aver Card at Shell stations, the card withdraws the purchase price from the cardholders' checking account, and Shell dealers will receive their money in some instances in less than a day. Greenwood Village, Colo.-based First Data, which will manage the program, will process the transactions over Connectpay, First Data's automated clearinghouse network, says Tim Horton, First Data's vice president product development. TeleCheck, another First Data company, authorizes transactions. As part of a promotion, cardholders will receive a five-cents-per-gallon discount on gasoline and diesel-fuel purchases until June 1. They will receive a two-cents-per-gallon discount thereafter, Hudson says. Shell is offering the card to motorists who do not qualify for one of Shell's branded credit cards, Hudson says.
