Sony Adds PayPal to PlayStation 3

Sony Corp. now lets PlayStation 3 owners fund their game and media purchases with PayPal accounts directly from their video game consoles.

Processing Content

To purchase downloadable games, movies and other media for use on PlayStation consoles, users must first fund a stored-value account with a credit card, PayPal account, gift card or mobile phone bill. Sony has supported PayPal funding since January, but only from the Sony website.

The additional payment option for the PlayStation 3 comes as Sony begins transitioning its customers to the PlayStation 4 console, which will be released Nov. 15. Sony has not said whether it will support PayPal on the PlayStation 4 – the Nov. 1 announcement mentions only the PlayStation 3, and a separate Frequently Asked Questions file on the PlayStation 4 does not explicitly discuss payment options.
